Soaring Lanterns at Twilight for Horn Solo by Kazimierz Machala is a very attractive addition to his notable library of original works for the Horn. It is a colorful set of variations that demonstrates a variety of expressions of a Hornist throughout a three-octave range from G2 to G5, and is still within the technical capabilities of a good collegiate Hornist. It is music that is very accessible to the listener, and soon may become a standard on many university recitals.

"At first glance, the title of this piece suggests a gentle and lyrical world: lanterns rising slowly into the evening sky, carrying with them associations of wishes, memory, farewell, and perhaps quiet reflection. The music unfolds in an unhurried tempo, its melodic line rising and falling with a natural sense of breath. What begins as a simple, contemplative idea gradually opens into a series of variations, each one revealing a slightly different shade of the original thought. The composition’s connection to Chinese characters also invites an additional visual dimension. In playing through the piece, I was reminded of Chinese calligraphy: a line that is carefully shaped, yet alive to the present moment. There is a sense of discipline, but also of spontaneity; respect for the past, while still allowing the music to move forward.
